Top Sites for Clothing Donations

Closet-clothes-donate-600

With the Spring around the corner, we all want to clean around the house, and getting rid of old unwanted clothing is part of Spring cleaning! According to my favorite magazing Oprah.com, these sites collect and pass on clothes, shoes, and even prom-style dresses and accessories. Since we all got some clothing we no longer want/need, so why not swing by these 4 sites to see if you want to donate some bags of forgotten or unwanted clothing.

ShareYourSoles.org sends donated casual footwear to needy people “from Appalachia to Sri Lanka.” Donated high heels are sold to fund the other shoe shipments.

GiveRunning.org specializes in athletic footwear, encouraging good fitness by handing out used sneakers to disadvantaged youths.

Clothes4Souls.org “cuts out the middleman” by sending donated clothes to business owners in developing countries rather than selling them to an international distributor. The local entrepreneurs “refurbish and merchandise the items themselves.”

WGirls.org “will gladly find a new owner” for any prom-style dress you’re done with. The group makes gently worn frocks and accessories available at boutique-style events for young women who otherwise might not be able to afford their proms.

And, here I am my own top sites for clothing donations:

Dressforsuccess.org this is a well-established charity that provides low-income women with appropriate donated clothing to help them dress properly for job interviews.

Soles4souls.org shoes take on a lot of wear and tear, and if not, they are usually dressy shoes or you have lots of them, like my case.  If you want to retire your trendy shoes, or know for a fact your will no longer wear a pair of shoes, consider donating them to Soles4Souls.com.

donateyouroldshoes.org is another shoe-collection agency that should be on your mommy radar.

Special Baby Gifts For Special Occasions

By Julie Shuford, Bering’s Hardware

The exciting news of a good friend or family member having a baby is about as special as it gets. There is no better way to put a stamp on their exciting moment in time than by marking the moment with a  sweet keepsake. We combed through some absolutely beautiful options and have listed our top picks for you to consider for your loved ones and their new little ones. From baby showers, to baptisms, to birthdays and first communions, a well thought out gift is sure to warm some hearts. While we all know material items come and go, I think we can agree that giving a heartfelt gift only makes special occasions even that much more special!

Before you scroll down to look at our top picks, don’t fret  about not having the time to run out and find any of these items. They can all be found online, which is such a convenience in making it all fit in a day’s to-do list! And now you don’t need to worry about searching for ‘special baby gifts’ online, because we believe you will fall in love with at least one of the options below. We hope this blog entry helps you to narrow down your options and select a gift almost as special as the baby receiving it.

Boutross Company Christening Bonnet Bow/Knots

These handmade pure linen baby bonnets become hankies with just the snip of a button. The hanky can be passed down as ‘something used’ for a wedding or simply tucked away in a safe spot to reflect on down the road. These are even gift boxed with a poem insert.

Bonnet

Christening Bible with Silver Cover

A silver heirloom quality christening bible always makes the perfect gift. To add a personal touch you might choose to engrave the baby’s birthdate on the back with their initials.

BIBLE

Empire Sterling Silver Baby Cup Beaded

This classic baby cup is adorable for baby showers, birthdays, and baptisms, and makes the perfect keepsake. These sweet little cups are also great for decorating. From tying them with a ribbon and hanging them on a chandalier for baby shower décor, to using them as bud vases or displayed in a grouping- pewter or silver baby cups are timeless.

EMPIRECUP

Empire Sterling Silver Baby Dumbbell Rattle

Nothing says new baby like a pewter or sterling baby dumbell rattle!

EMPIRERATTLE

Empire Sterling Silver Round Teething Ring

These sweet teethers are petite and discreet to give as gifts when you are looking for that perfect little something. They also make adorable Christmas tree ornaments, allowing you or the baby’s parents to reflect back on when their child was a little one!

TEETHER

Reed & Barton Classic Channel Frame

Just the gift to capture a special event! A nice frame is sure to be received with a smile and will cause others to smile too as they look at the sweet baby or child pictured.

FRAME

Reed & Barton Silverplate Victorian Curved Handle Baby Spoon

This precious keepsake is ideal for baby boys and girls alike. We love the curved handle, which makes it easy for little ones to hold. Placing this spoon next to a picture is a nice way to display it, or in a keepsake drawer. As with many of these heirloom quality gifts, this spoon is precious to decorate with when hosting baby showers or a baby’s baptism or christening get-together.

SILVERSPOON

Herend Collectibles

No question about it, Herend is in the business of timeless pieces. From Herend’s baby booty, to the cross, or a small animal figurine. All of Herend’s collectibles are excellent for giving to loved ones on special occasions to commemorate life’s most notable occasions.

Planning Through Budgeting, Couponing & Managing debt

IStock_000003955630XSmall
We all want to save money, be smart about our spending and manage well our debt, if we have some.  In this occassion, TheMomsBuzz.com brings you an expert guest author, Jason Holmes, who will give us some tips on tell how we plan better the way we spend through budgeting, couponing and other debt managing tips.

Planning the natural way through budgeting couponing & managing debt
by Jason Holmes

Mr. Micawber construed his idea on economics to David Copperfield. According to him if a man has 20 pounds and if he spends 19 pounds, 19 shillings, and sixpence, then he is going to be a happy man. However, if the same person spends the whole of the pound altogether, he is going to be a miserable man. In our modern world, understanding this fact is extremely important. We need to understand that we should spend money in such a way so that we can also save and maintain a proper balanced budget. This can help us avoid incurring debts and we will no more be required to live miserably; though it is true that there are various debt relief options like debt consolidation, debt settlement, debt management and so on.

Budgeting and couponing

Budgeting is essential for your finances and thus, budgeting should come to you naturally. Along with this, if you practice couponing, you may be able to save more money. That is what majority of the people do. But, very few people fail to maintain a proper budget and couponing. If you would really like to take the advantage of couponing, it is important for you to remain organized.

Budgeting helps you avoid overspending. So, what are the things that you should do in order to practice proper budgeting?

Jenny Packham FW 2012 - Mini Review

This past week I spent it at NYC for Fashion Week. As you know, when I am not a mommy blogger, I am fashion/runway photographer.  One of the shows, I fell in love with was that of Jenny Packham, inspired on the glamourous fashion of the 40's.  Check out my photos and you will see what I mean.

  • theme: Film Noir, circa 1945, Los Angeles
  • hair: Leonardo Mannetti, Community NYC for L’Oréal
  • makeup: Talia Shobrook, Community NYC for Laura Mercier
  • manicure/pedicure: Gina Edwards de Kate Ryan for Essie
  • accesories: Christian Louboutin stilletos, mega-large cocktail rings and large short earrings.

"The inspiration for my FW12 Collection Film Noir, A genre of films in the early 40’s which was low budget and somber with a new kind of leading lady: ‘She was almost always bewitchingly glamorous, slow to befriend and swift to betray, a haunting and often malevolently dangerous vision which could lure and man to his doom, or bring him to despair’(excerpt from Leading Lady by Don Macpherson, 1986)."  - Jenny Packham

Causes of Seasonal Affective Disorder and What should you do about it

Learn What S.A.D. is and How to Effectively Protect Yourself

SAD disorder is a seasonal depression that many people experience during specific months of the year. It is usually associated with the winter; though some individuals have experienced the same symptoms during the spring and summer months. In any season, S.A.D. is not a condition to be taken lightly.

Like any depression, the disorder is a debilitating condition that causes many problems in the lives of those that endure it. The symptoms that are noticed with this particular type of depression are gradual and sometimes they are forgotten in warmer seasons. Unfortunately, studies show that the condition can become more serious if not properly treated and addressed.

Remember those college years when the weekend started on Thursdays?  Yes, busy moms' weekends do not start sometimes until Saturday, but a mini happy hour at home could work wonders.  With the Oscars just in a few days, Moms Buzz thought a celebrity named-after drink would give you a little pop feeling, and it is so easy to make: The Angelina Jolie Drink!

The following makes 1 drink only, but that would be enough unless you would like your husband to join you...

Don't Settle When You Have a Goal in Mind

IStock_000001708008XSmall

They say that you can't have everything in life, and you must make a choice between A and B.  But, there is also another school of thought that says, "why must you make a choice, why can't you have them both?  If you want two things, and feel you need to make choice between the two, you are settling.  But, if you have that gut feeling that you can have both, you will not settle.

For many people, and it is mainly because we have been trained to think that way, having both A and B is not an option - we have to choose.  However, it is an option, and of course, it may depend on various considerations and variables.  But, in general, where there is a will there is way. Let me demonstrate this with a personal example.

Health: Tips for a Good Night Sleep

350x233_sleep_tips_2 A good rest at night is what busy moms need after a long and hectic day of running around in and outside the house or after a stressful day at work if you are working mom.  We have so much do that sometimes our solution often times is to stay up stealing away valuable hours from our sleep. Sleeping is necessary because it restores and rejuvenates many body functions such a our MEMORY (hello! Is anyone home?) and learning, nervous systems, immune system, mood enhancement, social behaviors, growth and development.  Moms' Buzz found these great tips to make our night sleep as restful as we can so that we can function better and be quite alert next day. Of course, these tips work best if your kids will not wake up in the middle of the night...oh well...such is the life of a mom!

Tips for a good night sleep

1. Don't sleep belly down. It is alway better to sleep on one side or on your back. When you sleep on your back, place a pillow underneath your knees.  This will liberate your back from tensions.

2. When you sleep on your side, place a pillow in-between your knees to maintain the alignment of your back.

3. Avoid using large or tall pillows. Pillows should be as high as to keep your head aligned with the rest of your body.

4.  Use a firm mattress which will help maintain the alignment of your body.

5. Don't nap during the day - who can do this these days mmm...?

6. Limit caffeine and alcohol. Although alcohol may initially act as sedative, it can interrupt your sleep patterns.

7. Don't smoke. Nicotine is a stimulant and can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Many over-the-counter and prescription drugs disrupt sleep.

8. Expose yourself to bright light/sunlight soon after awakening. This will help to regulate your body's natural biological clock.

9. Exercise early in the morning. Exercise stimulates the body and aerobic activity before bedtime may make falling asleep more difficult. The very few times I have exercised in the evening, I am so full of energy that sleeping is not what I want to do next.

10. Check your iron level. Iron deficient women tend to have more problems sleeping so if your blood is iron poor, a supplement might help your health and your ability to sleep.

Following are some guidelines on how much sleep you or your loved ones might need:

Sleep Needs Group Amount of Sleep Needed

Infants

About 16 hours per day of sleep

Babies and toddlers

From 6 months to 3 years: between 10 and 14 hours per day. Young children generally get their sleep from a combination of nighttime sleep and naps. See: How Much Sleep Is Enough for My Child?, especially for tips on shaping nighttime awakenings in young children.

Children

  • Ages 3 to 6: between 10 and 12 hours of sleep
  • Ages 6 to 9: about 10 hours of sleep
  • Ages 9 to 12: about 9 hours of sleep

Teenagers

About 9 hours of sleep per night. Teens have trouble getting enough sleep not only because of their busy schedules, but also because they are biologically programmed to want to stay up later and sleep later in the morning, which usually doesn’t mesh with school schedules. See How Much Sleep Do I Need?.

Adults

For most adults, 7 to 8 hours a night appears to be the best amount of sleep, although some people may need as few as 5 hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep each night.

Older adults

Current thought is that older adults need as much, if not more, sleep than middle-aged adults. Taking a midday nap may help. See Sleep and seniors: Insomnia isn't inevitable as you age.

Pregnant women

During pregnancy, women may need a few more hours of sleep per night. See Pregnancy and Sleep: A Contradiction in Terms?.

These guidelines are available for Download sleep_tips.pdf or it is available for printing, saving or dowload in our Useful Documents panel on the left sidebar of the blog.

Have a great day and restful night tonight!

Making Holiday Stockings

Moms Buzz loves the Martha Stewart website because it is filled with wonderful ideas for every occassion, and more so for the holidays.  Our pick for this season is making nice looking stockings that you can bring out and update every Christmas, year after year, as your kids grow older.

Making Holiday Stockings

They are quite easy to make.  Only the stocking requires sewing; the designs are glued on, for easy updating. For letters and numbers, enlarge a font from your computer and trace. Draw other shapes or photocopy and trace an existing image; attach with fabric glue. Keep the basic shape simple, then add details with felt, yarn, or marker. The snowflake's cutouts were made with a craft punch; the drum is embellished with embroidery floss.

To make the ones shown above in the image, go to Keepsake Stocking How-To using Martha Stewart's  stocking templates and cut felt pieces.

1. Pin a cuff to each stocking piece, lining up top edges. Trim long edges of loop with pinking shears; fold, and place between one cuff-and-stocking pair as shown (line up top edges). Sew along top edges. 2. Flip cuffs up, and stack stocking pieces (raw seams out); pin. Sew around stocking (use 1/4-inch seam allowance), including sides of cuff; leave top open. Pink sewn edges. Fold cuff down; iron to crease.

Happy crafting!

Laughter Yoga: laugh and live long!

Frances Beldia, Cure for Mondays

I truly believe that laughter is the best medicine. For one, I think it may have been the only thing that kept me sane -- alive even -- during the stormiest weathers in my life. Never mind that I did not get my mother’s milky skin which I think has a lot to do with her Chinese lineage and the result of years of bathing with a lot of coconut oil; or my elder sister’s share of admirable endowments in all the right places of her body. I believe I took on my father’s equable merry-andrew disposition with an inherent tendency to make fun of myself and even some of the hard-hitting tragedies in life. He would naturally draw people toward him because his humor could brighten up stiff corners in any room, let alone a stentorian voice that was difficult to ignore. For 26 years of my life, I lived in the house of a man who did not rely on scripts to bring episodic laughter under his roof. Laughing was a disease at home that my oft-downbeat mother tried to cure but failed.

Arielle

© Amee Butterworth and Honeydew Photography

In the eulogy I read during my father’s interment six years ago, I could not help but briefly relive his life as a man who made people laugh, and who had an incessant hankering for life’s happy episodes. It was so brief as a matter of fact, that all I asked was for everyone present in the church to remember the laughter that he brought to their lives and that I said with a smile. When I got back to my seat, a cousin whispered, “I thought a eulogy was supposed to be sad.”
